What are lengthened partials?

Lengthened partials are a much-discussed training technique: partial reps done on purpose in the stretched part of a lift. This entry explains what they are, how they differ from full range of motion and from the old lockout partials, what the evidence actually says, the main ways coaches use them, and how to prescribe them cleanly to a remote client.

Lengthened partials are partial reps performed on purpose in the stretched half of a lift, the deep bottom portion where the working muscle is at its longest, rather than the lockout or squeeze at the top. Picture the bottom third of a dumbbell curl with the arm hanging long, the deep stretch of a cable fly, or the low position of an overhead triceps extension: instead of completing the whole range, the client works short, controlled reps in that stretched zone. They are also called long-length partials or stretch-position reps, and they are usually added on top of normal full-range work, not used in place of it. That makes them the opposite of the old-school lockout partials, which trained only the top, shortened end of a movement.

The quickest way to understand lengthened partials is to see them next to the two things people mix them up with. The only real difference is which slice of the range the reps live in, and what that slice is good for.

So lockout partials are the old approach, trained at the top to move more weight through a short range. Lengthened partials flip that: the reps happen at the bottom, in the stretch, and the point is the stimulus, not the load on the bar. Full range of motion still does both ends in one rep, which is why partials of any kind sit around it, not in place of it. Why lengthened partials are having a moment.

Lengthened partials rode a wave of research interest in training muscles at long lengths. The idea is intuitive: the stretched position is where a muscle is under the most mechanical demand, so working there on purpose could be a useful stimulus for hypertrophy. That, plus a lot of social-media attention, is why coaches are suddenly hearing about them.

Here is the honest version. The interest is real and some findings are encouraging, but the evidence is young, the studies are small, and the effects that show up look modest rather than dramatic. There is no reliable, established number for how much better they are, so be sceptical of anyone quoting a neat percentage advantage. Training at long muscle lengths is a promising direction, not a settled result.

The takeaway for a coach is simple. Full range of motion remains the reliable default: it trains the stretch and the contraction together, it is easy to load and progress, and it is what the bulk of the evidence supports. Lengthened partials are a reasonable extra to layer on when you want a bit more work in the stretch. Use them as a supplement to good training volume and progressive overload, not a replacement for them.

Ways to program lengthened partials.

There is more than one way to get work into the stretched position, from a full extra technique to a quiet exercise choice. In every case the full-range set comes first, and the partial work is built around it.

Partials as a finisher After the last full rep a client can manage, they keep going with short reps in the stretched bottom until that runs out too. The most common use. It extends a set once full reps are spent, adding stretch work without a separate exercise.
Stretch-biased selection Pick exercises that load the muscle hard in the lengthened position: incline curls, overhead triceps extensions, deep flyes, seated hamstring work. A quieter way to train the stretch. Much of the benefit comes from exercise choice alone, with no special rep counting.
Pause-in-stretch reps Full reps, but with a short pause at the deep, stretched bottom of each one before driving back up. For clients who bounce out of the bottom. It builds control in the stretch and keeps tension where you want it.

Whichever method you choose, introduce it slowly. Work in a stretched position tends to produce DOMS out of proportion to how hard the set felt, so a client can finish thinking it was easy and be very sore two days later. Add partials to one or two exercises, keep volume modest for the first week, and let the muscle adapt. For pause-in-stretch reps, express the hold as a tempo count and run it through the tempo calculator so the client knows how long to pause.

The whole technique lives or dies on exercise choice. Lengthened partials belong on stretch-loaded isolation moves, where the hardest part of the rep is already the deep bottom and the joint is comfortable there:

  • Good fitSingle-joint, stretch-loaded work: incline curls, overhead triceps extensions, cable and dumbbell flyes, lying and seated hamstring curls, leaning lateral raises. Machines are ideal because the path is fixed.
  • Poor fitHeavily spinal-loaded compounds taken to fatigue, such as squats and deadlifts. Loading a deep stretch there under fatigue trades a small possible benefit for a real injury risk, so keep partials off them.

The other thing coaches get wrong is logging. Mix partials into the same rep count as full reps and the numbers stop meaning anything: you cannot tell whether a client is progressing. Count partials separately, never let a stretched-partial set stand in as a full-range personal record, and keep them on their own line so the full-range trend stays honest.

Beyond that, treat them like any other variable: add them where they have a job, change one thing at a time, and watch recovery before you push further. How to prescribe lengthened partials in a coaching app.

A stretched partial is defined by depth and control, the very things that get lost when a client trains alone. So the job in a coaching app is to make the intent survive without you there: write it into the exercise, cue it plainly, and check the depth on video.

Write it in the builder

Attach a note to the exercise in the workout builder that spells out the partials: how many full reps first, then partials in the bottom stretch only. Add a tempo or ROM cue for a pause so it reads the same every session. The tempo calculator turns any pause into a clear count.

Put the cue on their screen

A rep count alone is easy to misread, so pair it with plain language: stay in the bottom, deep stretch only, do not come up to the squeeze. The client reads that next to the exercise demo at the moment they lift, the only place a depth cue actually changes how someone moves.

Ask for a short clip the first time a client runs partials, because the whole point is the stretch, and a shallow half-rep is not the same thing. A quick remote form check confirms they are reaching real depth before you build on the technique.

What are the best exercises for lengthened partials?

The best fits are isolation exercises that already load the muscle hard in its stretched position, where the bottom of the movement is the hardest part. Good examples are incline dumbbell curls, overhead triceps extensions, cable or dumbbell flyes, seated or lying hamstring curls, and dumbbell lateral raises leaning away from a support. What does not fit well is any heavily spinal-loaded compound at fatigue, where adding stretched partials trades a small possible benefit for a real safety cost. When in doubt, keep partials on machines and single-joint moves.

How many sets of lengthened partials should a client do?

Start small. Because they are an extension of your existing plan, you do not need many. Adding partials to the last one or two working sets of a chosen isolation exercise, once or twice per week for a muscle, is plenty to see whether a client responds and recovers well. Turning every set into partials mostly buys extra soreness. Add them where they have a clear job, keep the rest of the plan intact, and let your normal volume and progression do the heavy lifting.
