Bands are broad guides for a full squat, bench and deadlift total. Because DOTS already adjusts for bodyweight, the same band means the same thing for a light lifter and a heavy one - track the change in your own score over a block rather than chasing a single number.

The DOTS score is a bodyweight-adjusted number that lets powerlifters of different sizes be compared fairly. It is calculated as DOTS = total in kg x 500 / P(bodyweight in kg), where P is a fourth-degree polynomial fitted separately for men and women. A 90 kg man who totals 600 kg gets P = 773.27, so his score is 600 x 500 / 773.27 = 387.96 DOTS - just under the "strong" band. A higher score means more strength relative to bodyweight.

DOTS has one shape: score = total x 500 / P(x), where x is bodyweight in kilograms and P is the fourth-degree polynomial below. Pounds are converted internally at 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg before the formula runs, so the same lifter gets the same score whether they type kg or lb. These are the published DOTS coefficients used by meet software and open-results databases.

Worked through for the men's coefficients, a 90 kg bodyweight gives P = -307.75076 + 24.0900756 x 90 - 0.1918759221 x 90² + 0.0007391293 x 90³ - 0.000001093 x 90⁴ = 773.27, so a 600 kg total scores 600 x 500 / 773.27 = 387.96. On the women's coefficients, a 60 kg lifter gives P = 451.04, so a 320 kg total scores 320 x 500 / 451.04 = 354.73. Change the bodyweight and the same total earns a different score - that is the whole idea.
The polynomial is fitted on adult competitive bodyweights - roughly 40 to 210 kg for men and 40 to 150 kg for women. Outside that range this calculator holds bodyweight at the nearest fitted bound and tells you, rather than extrapolating the curve into territory it was never fitted for.
Why federations moved from Wilks to DOTS.
For decades, the standard way to compare lifters across bodyweights was the Wilks score, a fifth-degree polynomial fitted in the 1990s. As large open-results databases grew, analysts could see that Wilks drifted at the extremes: it was generous to very heavy men and harsh on very light and very heavy women, so two lifters of equal relative strength could land on noticeably different Wilks scores purely because of where they sat on the bodyweight curve.
DOTS was built to fix that. It refit the curve as a fourth-degree polynomial on modern raw-lifting data, flattening the bias at the light and heavy ends so the score tracks relative strength more evenly across the whole range. Because the correction mattered most to the lifters Wilks treated least fairly, many federations and open databases adopted DOTS as their default coefficient around 2019 to 2020. One point of confusion worth clearing up: a DOTS score is not a raw-strength ranking on its own. It is a comparison number. To turn a client's lifts into "where should this be for someone at their level", pair the DOTS score with the strength standards calculator, which reads each lift against untrained-to-elite benchmarks for their bodyweight.
One number that makes a whole roster of lifters comparable.
Raw totals mislead a coach. A 100 kg client adding 10 kg to their deadlift and a 60 kg client adding 10 kg are not the same event, and a leaderboard of raw totals just ranks bodyweight. DOTS fixes both at once: score every client on the same scale, and the leaderboard starts rewarding relative progress - which is what keeps the lighter lifters engaged instead of parked at the bottom.
The second job is tracking one client through a weight change. On a cut, a falling total can hide the fact that relative strength is holding or even climbing, and a steady DOTS score is the evidence that keeps the client calm. In reverse, if bodyweight climbs on a bulk and DOTS falls, the added mass is not buying strength and the program needs a look. What is a good DOTS score?
As a rough guide for a squat, bench and deadlift total: around 300 is a solid intermediate lifter, 400 is strong and meet-competitive, and 500 and up is elite territory. Because DOTS adjusts for bodyweight, those bands mean the same thing for a 55 kg lifter and a 110 kg lifter - a 90 kg man who totals 600 kg scores 387.96, sitting just under the strong band.

Can I calculate a DOTS score in pounds?
Yes. The formula is defined in kilograms, so this calculator converts pounds internally at 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg before it runs. Enter bodyweight and total in whichever unit you train in and the score comes out the same - the DOTS number itself has no unit.
Can I use DOTS for a single lift instead of a full total?
Yes. The formula multiplies whatever weight you enter by the bodyweight coefficient, so you can score a full three-lift total or a single squat, bench or deadlift. Just compare like with like - a single-lift DOTS score is only meaningful against other single-lift scores for the same movement.
