To load a barbell, use plates per side = (target weight minus bar weight) / 2, then stack that amount on each sleeve, heaviest plate first. For 102.5 kg on a 20 kg bar that is 41.25 kg per side = 25 + 15 + 1.25. If your plates cannot make the exact number, the calculator loads the closest weight.
How is plate loading calculated?
Every loaded barbell is the bar plus two identical stacks of plates. So the only number that matters is the per-side load: (target - bar) / 2. The calculator then fills that per-side amount from your ticked plate pairs, heaviest plate first - the same way you would load it in the gym, and the way that keeps the biggest plates against the collar.
Greedy loading alone can miss combinations when a rack is incomplete (with only 20s and 15s, a 30 kg side is two 15s, not a 20 that leaves 10 unreachable). So this tool runs an exact search over every combination of your available plates and returns the heaviest loadable weight at or below the target. When your plates cannot make the number, you see the closest achievable weight and the exact remainder, so you can decide whether to round down, grab fractional plates, or adjust the program.
Standard sets are built in: kg pairs of 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25, and lb pairs of 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5, with 20 kg / 45 lb, 15 kg / 35 lb and technique-bar options for the bar itself. A target below the bar weight gets flagged with a suggestion to pick a lighter bar - no bar loads negative plates.
How much is one, two, three or five plates on each side?
One plate each side is 60 kg on a 20 kg bar, or 135 lb on a 45 lb bar; every extra pair adds 40 kg or 90 lb. So two plates is 100 kg (225 lb), three is 140 kg (315 lb), four is 180 kg (405 lb), five is 220 kg (495 lb). "A plate" means the biggest standard plate, 20 kg in a kg gym and 45 lb in a lb gym, and the phrase always means per side.
"A plate plus 15" is one 20 kg plate and one 15 kg plate per side: 20 + 35 x 2 = 90 kg. In pounds, a 45 and a 15 per side is 45 + 60 x 2 = 165 lb; a 45 and a 35 is 205 lb; a 45 and a 25 is 185 lb. The calculator above does the same sum for any target and any rack.

A 45 lb plate is 20.4 kg and a 45 lb bar is 20.4 kg, so a lb gym total runs about 2 percent above the matching kg total.
Worked example: 120 kg on a 20 kg bar is (120 minus 20) / 2 = 50 kg per side, so two 25s on each sleeve. The table below runs the same sum for the five targets coaches program most, using a standard kg rack.

Turning programmed percentages into loadable weights.
Percentage-based programming constantly spits out numbers no plate set can make - 72.5% of a 143 kg squat is 103.7 kg. A coach writing that into a program is really deciding two things: what the client should lift, and what the client CAN load in their gym. How do you calculate which plates to put on a barbell?
Subtract the bar weight from the target weight, then divide by two: plates per side = (target - bar) / 2. Load that number onto each sleeve starting with the heaviest plate that fits and working down. For 140 kg on a 20 kg bar: (140 - 20) / 2 = 60 kg per side, which is 25 + 20 + 15.
How much does a standard barbell weigh?
A standard Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (45 lb, technically 44.1 lb). The most common alternatives are the 15 kg (35 lb) bar and 10 kg or 25 lb technique bars. Always confirm which bar a client is using before loading - a 5 kg difference in bar weight changes every set on the program.
What plates come in a standard kg and lb set?
Standard kg pairs are 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg. Standard lb pairs are 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb. Most commercial gyms carry all of them, but home gyms and hotel gyms often skip the small change plates - untick the pairs that are missing and this calculator works with what is actually on the rack.
What if my target weight cannot be made with my plates?
The calculator falls back to the closest weight you can load at or below the target and tells you the remainder. Loading slightly under is the standard call: percentages are estimates anyway, and a few kilos light never hurt a set the way a missed rep at a too-heavy load does. Fractional plates (0.5-1.25 kg) close the gap if you need exact numbers.
Why do programmed percentages land on weights I cannot load?
Because a percentage of a one rep max is just math - 72.5% of 143 kg is 103.7 kg, and no plate set makes that. Coaches round every programmed load to the nearest loadable weight, usually 2.5 kg or 5 lb jumps. That is exactly what this tool does: it converts an awkward programmed number into the plates that actually go on the bar.
Do I count plates for both sides or one side?
This calculator shows the plates for ONE side - you mirror the same stack on the other sleeve. That matches how lifters load a bar in practice. So "1 x 20 kg, 1 x 10 kg per side" on a 20 kg bar means two 20s and two 10s in total, for a loaded weight of 80 kg.
How much is 5 plates on each side?
220 kg on a 20 kg bar with 20 kg plates (20 + 5 x 20 x 2), or 495 lb on a 45 lb bar with 45 lb plates (45 + 5 x 45 x 2). Six plates is 260 kg or 585 lb; seven is 300 kg or 675 lb. The lookup table above lists one to seven plates per side in both systems.
A plate plus 15 on the bar is how much?
90 kg in a kg gym: a 20 kg plate and a 15 kg plate on each side is 35 kg per side, plus the 20 kg bar. In a lb gym, a 45 lb plate and a 15 lb plate per side is 60 lb per side plus the 45 lb bar, 165 lb. Say the unit when you write it in a client's programme; the two answers are 45 kg apart.
Can ChatGPT write a warm-up ladder from a plate loading result?
Yes: paste the working weight, the bar and your plate pairs and it writes five warm-up steps with plates per side and reps, ending near 90 percent of the working weight. Keep the working weight as this calculator gave it; the ladder is arithmetic the model does well.
Which plates make 100 kg on a 20 kg bar?
(100 minus 20) / 2 = 40 kg per side, which is two 20 kg plates on each sleeve. For 120 kg it is 50 kg per side (two 25s), and for 140 kg it is 60 kg per side (two 25s and a 10). The table on this page lists 60 to 140 kg in 20 kg steps.
