Every weight is rounded to the nearest 5 lb / 2.5 kg so it loads on a standard barbell with change plates, and no step is prescribed below the empty bar (assumed 45 lb / 20 kg). If a percentage lands at or below bar weight, that step becomes an empty-bar set.

A warm-up ramp climbs from the empty bar to your first working set in a few low-rep steps. The math is warm-up weight = working weight x percentage, at roughly 45%, 65%, 80% and 90%, each rounded to the nearest 5 lb / 2.5 kg. Reps fall as weight climbs - about 10, 8, 5, 3, 1 - so you rehearse the movement and prime the nervous system without burning energy you need for the real sets.

A warm-up ramp does two jobs at once. The light early sets handle general preparation: they raise muscle temperature, get synovial fluid moving in the joints, and give you cheap, low-risk rehearsal of the bar path. The heavier late sets handle specific preparation - a phenomenon lifters know as post-activation potentiation, where brief exposure to near-working loads makes the working weight feel lighter and move faster because the nervous system has already recruited the high-threshold motor units it needs.
The failure mode in both directions is well known. Skip the ramp and the first working set is slow, technically sloppy, and harder on cold joints than it needs to be. Overdo the ramp - too many reps at 80-90% - and you walk into the working sets already fatigued, which quietly steals reps from the sets that actually drive progress. The descending rep scheme (roughly 10, 8, 5, 3, 1) is how you thread that needle: plenty of practice while the bar is light, single-rep primers once it is heavy.
The math itself is simple: each warm-up weight is the working weight multiplied by the step's percentage (45%, 65%, 80%, 90% on the full ramp; 55% and 80% on the quick ramp), then rounded to the nearest 2.5 kg or 5 lb so the number is loadable with a standard pair of change plates, with the empty bar (20 kg / 45 lb) as the floor. The value of a calculator is not the multiplication - it is getting a loadable, sensibly ordered ramp in two seconds instead of doing plate arithmetic between sets.

How do you calculate warm-up sets?
Take the working weight for your first hard set and ramp up to it in steps: empty bar for around 10 reps, then roughly 45%, 65%, 80% and 90% of the working weight with reps dropping from 8 down to 1. Each step weight is the working weight multiplied by the percentage, rounded to the nearest 2.5 kg or 5 lb so the bar is actually loadable. How many warm-up sets should I do before a heavy lift?
Heavier working weights need more steps. For big barbell lifts near 80%+ of max, a 5-step ramp (bar, 45%, 65%, 80%, 90%) prepares the joints and nervous system without accumulating fatigue. For lighter working sets, accessories, or a lifter short on time, a 3-step ramp (bar, 55%, 80%) is usually enough. The reps drop each step so the total warm-up work stays low.
Why do warm-up reps decrease as the weight goes up?
The early light sets do the general work - blood flow, joint lubrication, movement rehearsal - so they get more reps. The heavy late sets exist to prime the nervous system for the working load (post-activation potentiation), and high reps at 80-90% would just create fatigue. That is why a good ramp runs 10, 8, 5, 3, 1: lots of practice while it is cheap, minimal reps once it is expensive.
How long should I rest between warm-up sets?
Short. Around 30-60 seconds after the light sets, 60-90 seconds around 65%, and roughly 2 minutes after the 80-90% singles and triples so the nervous system recovers before the working set. Resting longer than that on light sets just cools you back down and stretches the session.
Should warm-up weights be rounded to plate sizes?
Yes. A prescription of 67.3 kg is not loadable on a real barbell, so this calculator rounds every step to the nearest 2.5 kg (or 5 lb), which is the smallest jump a standard pair of change plates allows. It also never prescribes less than the empty bar - if a percentage lands below bar weight, the step becomes an empty-bar set.
Do warm-up sets count toward training volume?
Not meaningfully. Warm-up sets are deliberately kept far from failure - that is the point of cutting reps as weight climbs - so they add little stimulus and little fatigue. Coaches count working sets for volume and treat the ramp as preparation. If a warm-up set feels like a working set, the ramp is too aggressive or the working weight is set too high that day.
The ramp percentages here are a solid default for barbell strength work, not a law - adjust step count for the lift, the lifter and the day. This tool is general fitness information, not medical advice.
