the short answer

A good discovery call is a structured conversation, not a pitch.

A discovery call script for personal trainers has seven parts: a short agenda-setting opening, story questions, a goal deep-dive, obstacle questions, a summary that connects what you heard to how you coach, a plain one-sentence price, and a close with honest responses to the common hesitations. The client should do roughly two thirds of the talking until the summary - the call sells because the client hears their own situation understood, not because the coach performs.

The generator above assembles the full structure around your details. Use the word-for-word version until the shape is second nature, then switch to bullet prompts so the call sounds like you on a good day.

running the call

Where discovery calls are actually won and lost.

Won in the summary. The moment that converts is when you play back the client's situation - goal, history, obstacles - in their own words and connect each obstacle to something concrete in how you coach. That only works if the question phases before it were real listening, which is why the script front-loads questions and holds your talking for the second half.

Lost at the price. The two classic mistakes are presenting price before the summary, so it lands without context, and talking after the price, so the silence gets filled with discounts nobody asked for. Say the number, say what it covers, stop. If you need help settling the number itself, run the coaching rate calculator before the call, and see how full your book can get with the client capacity calculator.

And decided before it starts. A call that begins on time, on video, with the client's enquiry details already in front of you is half won. Where those enquiry answers live matters: a lead form that feeds the call means you ask deeper questions instead of repeating basics. The wider system around the call - capturing the lead, booking it, and converting a yes into an onboarded client - is covered in the client acquisition guide and the price objections playbook.

common questions

Discovery call FAQ.

What should a discovery call script for personal training include?

Seven parts, in order. A short opening that sets the agenda so the client knows what will happen. Story questions that let the client talk about where they are now. A goal deep-dive that turns "get fit" into something specific with a why behind it. Obstacle questions about what has stopped them before, because the obstacles are what your coaching actually solves. A summary where you play back what you heard and connect it to how you would coach them. A clear, calm price presentation. And a close that asks for a decision, plus honest responses ready for the common hesitations. The script is a spine, not a cage - the best calls sound like conversations because the coach knows the structure well enough to leave it and come back.

How long should a discovery call be?

For most coaches, 20 to 30 minutes is the sweet spot. Shorter than that and the client has not talked enough for the summary to land as "this person gets it"; much longer and the call drifts into free coaching. A useful ratio to aim for: the client talks about two thirds of the time until you reach the summary. If your calls keep running past 45 minutes, the fix is usually asking tighter questions, not booking a longer slot.

How do I present my price on a discovery call?

After the summary, not before - price only makes sense once the client has heard you connect their situation to your coaching. Then say the price plainly in one sentence, including what it covers, and stop talking. The pause feels long to you and normal to the client. Filling the silence with justifications or an unprompted discount is the most common way coaches talk themselves out of a sale. If you are unsure what the number itself should be, work it out before the call, never during it.

What do I say when a client wants to think about it?

Take it at face value and get specific: "Of course - what part do you want to think over?" Most of the time the real hesitation surfaces immediately, and it is usually price, time, or a partner to consult, each of which you can address honestly. Then agree a concrete next step with a time attached, such as a follow-up message tomorrow, rather than leaving it open. A genuine "not now" is a fine outcome - the script is there to make sure the decision is being made on real information, not to pressure anyone.

This script is a starter you should reword until it sounds like you. It is a conversation structure, not a pressure system - a genuine "not for me" is a fine outcome of a good discovery call, and nothing here promises a client any training result.
