HYROX coach certification: the options, and whether you need one.

Coaches who search for a HYROX certification usually want to know three things: is it required, what does the official course actually give you, and does the qualification you already hold count. This guide answers all three, with the HYROX Academy courses and prices as listed on HYROX's own site on 24 October 2026, the PT, S&C and running credentials that transfer, and a step-by-step route to coaching your first HYROX athletes.

By Markus Evers · Updated October 2026

the short version

In most places no law requires a HYROX certification to coach running, strength endurance and the stations, but you do need a recognised personal trainer or strength and conditioning qualification and insurance. The official HYROX Academy sells a Foundation Course, Level 1 and Level 2 online. Official titles such as HYROX Performance Coach require a paid affiliation, and HYROX says non-affiliated coaches may not use that label or offer HYROX training, so check its terms before you use the name.

Do you need a certification to coach HYROX?

In most places no law requires a HYROX-specific certification to coach the training behind the race: running, strength endurance and the eight stations. What you do need is a recognised personal trainer or strength and conditioning qualification and liability insurance, because that is what clients, gyms and insurers check. The HYROX certification matters for a different reason. HYROX controls its own titles: Group Instructor and HYROX Performance Coach depend on its Academy courses plus an affiliation, and its course page says non-affiliated coaches may not label themselves Performance Coach or offer HYROX training. Read those terms before you put HYROX in your offer.

So there are really two questions hiding in one. The first is competence: can you safely program a client for an hour or more of running and loaded work? That comes from your base qualification, your own training and the specialist knowledge you add. The second is branding: do you want to call yourself an official HYROX coach, appear in its directory and market your offer with its name? That is a commercial relationship with HYROX, not an exam.

If you are still choosing a base qualification, start with the personal trainer certifications that suit online coaching, and check what cover you need in online personal trainer insurance. This page is general information, not legal or professional advice.

the official route

What are the official HYROX coaching certifications?

HYROX's official coach education is the HYROX Academy, run through the HYROX365 site. When we checked on 24 October 2026 it offered three self-paced online courses: the Foundation Course (Race Ready) at $49, Level 1 (Creating Athletes) at $299 and Level 2 (Mastering Performance) at $399, each plus taxes. Separately, HYROX Performance Coach is a paid annual affiliation for independent coaches, gym coaches and personal trainers. It requires the Foundation and Level 1 courses plus the accreditation and insurance needed for personal training. Gyms have their own affiliation, the HYROX Training Club.

HYROX Academy courses and the HYROX Performance Coach affiliation: price, length, languages and what each gives you, as listed on hyrox365.com on 24 October 2026
Course or status Listed price Length and format Languages What it gives you
Foundation Course (Race Ready) $49 plus taxes Over 4 hours, self-paced online English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese Official HYROX Group Instructor, but only for suitably qualified coaches at affiliated gyms
Level 1 (Creating Athletes) $299 plus taxes Roughly 60 to 75 hours, 8 modules English, Spanish Counts toward HYROX Performance Coach, if you are affiliated
Level 2 (Mastering Performance) $399 plus taxes ($629 bundled with Level 1) Around 40 hours, 10 modules English Described by HYROX as its highest education status
HYROX Performance Coach (affiliation, not a course) From 1,150 USD or EUR (1,050 GBP) per year 12-month term, renews automatically n/a Use of the Performance Coach label, instructions for a coach directory listing, Foundation and Level 1 included

Source: the HYROX365 Academy and affiliation pages, checked 24 October 2026. Prices, languages and terms change, so confirm them there before you buy. The course pages we read do not describe an exam, and the Level 2 page does not say whether Level 1 is required first.

Group Instructor

The Foundation Course is open to racers and coaches alike and is mostly about the race: divisions, the rule book, movement standards, a 12-week plan and group-class planning. For suitably qualified coaches working at affiliated gyms, completing it lets them call themselves official HYROX Group Instructors. If you are not at an affiliated gym, it is a cheap and useful primer, not a title.

HYROX Performance Coach

This is the official status for independent and online coaches who want to call themselves HYROX coaches. It is an affiliation, not a course: listed from 1,150 USD or EUR (1,050 GBP) a year on a 12-month term that renews automatically unless you cancel 60 days before the end. It includes the Foundation and Level 1 courses, HYROX programming tools and instructions for getting listed in the HYROX Coaches Directory.

inside the course

What does the HYROX Level 1 course cover, and what is still missing?

Level 1 is the core course. HYROX lists eight modules: shaping your coaching philosophy, functional anatomy and biomechanics, the HYROX performance pillars, the HYROX engine (aerobic capacity), nutrition, running technique and HYROX race workouts, planning and organising training, and the art of coaching. That is a solid map of the sport. What a race-specific course cannot do is replace the general skills you need for any client: assessing them, writing a strength progression they can actually follow, building their running safely and running a coaching business.

Topics the HYROX Academy courses cover, next to the skills a HYROX coach usually builds from other qualifications and experience
Covered by the HYROX courses Usually built elsewhere
The race format, rule book and movement standards Assessing a new client and screening for injury history
HYROX performance pillars and race workouts Long-term strength programming for clients who are not yet strong enough for the sled
Aerobic capacity and running technique basics A full running build for clients whose 8 km is the weak link
Planning and organising training Load management across a mixed week when the client also lifts, runs or plays a sport
An introduction to nutrition Detailed nutrition coaching, inside the scope your qualification allows
The art of coaching Getting clients, pricing an offer and delivering it online

The right-hand column is where most HYROX coaching is won or lost. A client who walks the sled push or falls apart on run five needs a coach who can see which capacity is missing and build it over months, not just a coach who knows the station order. The programming side of that, from assessment to race-week taper, is in our guide on how to coach HYROX athletes. This page stays on the credential question.

other routes

Which PT, S&C and running qualifications transfer to HYROX coaching?

Almost every recognised fitness qualification transfers to HYROX coaching, because the race tests capacities those qualifications already teach. A personal trainer certification gives you programming basics, client screening and usually the route to insurance. A strength and conditioning certification such as the NSCA's CSCS adds periodisation and conditioning for athletes. A running coach certification adds aerobic base building, pacing and running load. Each leaves one gap: PTs and S&C coaches tend to need more running, running coaches more strength endurance. Pick the next credential to close your own gap, not to collect logos.

Common qualification routes into HYROX coaching: what each brings and the gap it usually leaves
Qualification route What it brings to HYROX coaching The gap it usually leaves
General personal trainer certification (e.g. NASM, ACE, ISSA, NSCA-CPT, or a regulated national PT qualification) Exercise science, programming basics, client screening and, usually, the route to insurance Little on race-specific running, pacing or compromised running
Strength and conditioning certification (e.g. NSCA CSCS) Periodisation, strength and power development, conditioning for athletes Station technique, race rules and HYROX-specific pacing
Running coach certification (e.g. RRCA, UESCA) Building aerobic base, run paces and zones, running load and injury-risk awareness Sled, carry and wall-ball strength endurance
HYROX Academy Foundation and Level 1 Race format, standards, HYROX-specific workouts and planning Not a substitute for the PT accreditation and insurance HYROX itself asks for

Named certifications are examples of each category, not endorsements. Requirements, costs and recognition vary by country and change over time; check the certifying body before you enrol.

You are a PT

You already have the base. Add running: learn to build an aerobic base, set run paces and manage running volume, then rehearse runs straight after station work. How to become a running coach compares the running credentials.

You are an S&C coach

Your periodisation and conditioning transfer directly. Learn the race rules and movement standards, and shift the emphasis from peak power toward strength endurance over a long effort. Our guide to strength and conditioning certifications covers the CSCS and the alternatives.

You are a running coach

You own the 8 km. Add strength: sled, carries, lunges and wall balls under fatigue, with a strength block that builds up to them. If your runners are drifting into hybrid racing, what hybrid training is sets out how the two sides fit.

step by step

How do you become a HYROX coach?

To become a HYROX coach, get a recognised PT or S&C qualification and insurance, train or race the format yourself, close the gap your qualification leaves (running or strength endurance), and decide whether you want official HYROX status through the Academy courses and an affiliation. Then build a race-prep offer with an end date, test each athlete's runs and stations at the start, and coach them against those benchmarks through the block. The order matters: competence first, branding second, business third. Skipping straight to the badge leaves you with a title and no method behind it.

  1. 01

Get a recognised base qualification and insurance

Start with a personal trainer or strength and conditioning certification that is recognised where you coach, and get liability insurance that covers the work. HYROX's own Performance Coach route asks for both, so this step comes first whichever path you take.

  2. 02

Race it, or at least train it, yourself

Do the eight stations and the 1 km runs in the order they come on race day before you coach them. Feeling what the sled does to your legs on the next run teaches you more about pacing than any module.

  3. 03

Fill the gap your base qualification leaves

A PT usually needs more running knowledge; a running coach needs more strength-endurance knowledge. Add a running or S&C credential, or the HYROX Academy Level 1 course, depending on which side is weaker.

  4. 04

Decide whether you want official HYROX status

If you want the Group Instructor or Performance Coach title, or plan to use HYROX branding in your offer, read the affiliation terms on the HYROX365 site and budget for the annual fee. If not, coach race-style hybrid training and describe your offer without the HYROX name or a title you do not hold.

  5. 05

Build a race-prep offer with an end date

HYROX races have a date, so a 12 or 16-week prep block with weekly check-ins and a race-week taper is easy to explain and easy to say yes to. Write down what is included, how often you review, and what happens after the race.

  6. 06

Coach your first athletes and track the benchmarks

Test the runs and stations at the start, retest at set points in the block, and use what you see to adjust the plan. Those benchmarks are also the honest proof you can show the next athlete.

If you are coming into fitness coaching from scratch rather than adding HYROX to an existing practice, start with how to become a personal trainer, then come back to steps two to six.

once you are qualified

How do you package HYROX prep online?

HYROX suits online coaching better than most niches. The athlete trains at their own gym or club, the race has a fixed date, and most of what you need to see is measurable: run splits, station times, loads and how hard each session felt. A typical online offer is a 12 or 16-week race-prep block with a written plan, a weekly check-in, a form check by video when a movement looks off, and a race-week taper. If you do not hold official HYROX status, describe the offer as race-style hybrid training and keep the HYROX name and titles out of how you sell it.

Three things make that offer work. First, a plan that holds runs and station work in the same week, so the athlete is not juggling two apps. Second, run data that arrives on its own from the athlete's watch or phone, so you are not asking for screenshots. Third, a check-in you can review in minutes, because a squad of race-prep clients all check in on the same day.

How to split the training week and taper is in how to coach HYROX athletes; the tools that deliver it are compared in HYROX coaching software; and for setting the price of a prep block, see how to price online coaching packages.

delivering race prep

Run a HYROX prep block from one place.

Coachway is a coaching platform for online coaches, including hybrid and HYROX coaches. In the workout builder you write run intervals and station work in the same session, with supersets, AMRAP, tempo, RPE and exercise alternatives, and the athlete logs every set with a rest timer in the app. The exercise library has 1,800+ exercises with video demos. Runs come back through Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect or Fitbit, weekly check-ins run on custom forms, and the Power Panel shows each athlete's numbers, photos, training log and latest messages on one screen. Form checks arrive as video messages in chat, and nutrition targets and the meal planner cover race fuelling.

It costs EUR 69 a month including up to 5 active clients, then EUR 9 per extra active client, with every feature on one plan (USD 79 plus USD 10), so 15 athletes is EUR 159 a month. Athletes pay you through your own Stripe account; the subscription takes no share of your coaching revenue, and built-in payments cost 2.4% per transaction. Coachway is not affiliated with or endorsed by HYROX.

questions coaches ask

Frequently asked questions about HYROX coach certification.

Do you need a certification to coach HYROX?

In most places no law requires a specific certification to coach HYROX-style training, but you should hold a recognised personal trainer or strength and conditioning qualification and insurance before you coach anyone. HYROX controls its own titles: on its Academy pages, the Group Instructor and HYROX Performance Coach statuses depend on its courses plus an affiliation, and non-affiliated coaches are told they may not use the Performance Coach label or offer HYROX training. Check the current terms before you use the HYROX name in your offer.

How much does HYROX coach certification cost?

When we checked the HYROX365 Academy pages on 24 October 2026, the Foundation Course was listed at $49, Level 1 at $299 and Level 2 at $399, all plus taxes, with Level 1 and Level 2 bundled at $629. The HYROX Performance Coach affiliation was listed from 1,150 USD or EUR (1,050 GBP) per year and includes the Foundation and Level 1 courses. Prices change, so confirm them on the HYROX365 site before you buy.

Is the HYROX Level 1 course worth it?

It is worth it if you want official HYROX status, plan to join an affiliated gym, or want a structured course on the race format and HYROX-specific training. It is less essential if you already hold a strong PT or S&C qualification and have raced HYROX yourself, because much of the coaching skill comes from programming running and strength endurance together. Level 1 alone does not give you the Performance Coach title unless you are affiliated.

Can a personal trainer coach HYROX athletes?

Yes. A qualified personal trainer already has the base most HYROX coaching needs: strength programming, client screening and conditioning. What PTs usually need to add is running knowledge, so the athlete can handle 8 km of running between the stations, and an understanding of pacing on tired legs. A running course, an S&C credential or the HYROX Academy Level 1 course can fill that gap.

What is a HYROX Performance Coach?

HYROX Performance Coach is HYROX's affiliation status for independent coaches, in-gym coaches and personal trainers. According to the HYROX365 affiliation page on 24 October 2026, it requires the accreditation and insurance needed for personal training plus the Foundation and Level 1 courses, runs on a paid 12-month term that renews automatically, and gives you the label, access to HYROX programming tools and instructions for getting listed in the HYROX Coaches Directory.

Can you coach HYROX athletes online?

Yes. Most of HYROX prep is running, strength and station work the athlete can do at their own gym, so it suits online coaching well. You program the week, the athlete logs runs and stations, and you review a weekly check-in with run data, station times and how the sessions felt. Form checks work through short videos sent in chat.
