We're fully on board with the core idea, and for a coaching business it's an easy call: testing maxes with general clients is almost pure downside. The number rarely changes what you'd program next, and the risk-and-fatigue bill lands on someone whose job, sleep and stress you don't control. For the everyday client, "how heavy today" should be answered by an effort target, not by finding out what they can barely grind.
Where we'd add nuance: autoregulation only works if the client can actually read effort. RPE and reps-in-reserve are skills, and a brand-new lifter usually over- or under-shoots for a while. So the honest default is to teach effort gradually - anchor early load with rep ranges at a hard-but-controlled weight, and layer in RPE as the client learns what "two reps left" really feels like. The coaching-specific win is measurement without testing. You don't need a true 1RM to prove a client is progressing - a heavy set of a few reps gives you an estimated max, and progressive overload on those working sets tells you the strength is going the right way. What is autoregulation in strength training?
Autoregulation means letting the load adjust to how a client actually performs on the day instead of locking a fixed weight into the program weeks in advance. The most common tool is RPE (rate of perceived exertion) or RIR (reps in reserve): you prescribe an effort target - say, sets left around 2 reps short of failure - and the client picks the weight that hits that effort today. On a strong day the bar goes up, on a rough-sleep day it comes down, and either way the training stimulus stays where you wanted it. It's the mechanism that lets you get the benefit of heavy work without gambling on a fixed number the client may not have in them that session.
Do clients need to test their one-rep max?
For most general clients, rarely. A true 1RM test is a measurement with real fatigue and risk attached, and you only need it when the number itself matters - a powerlifting meet, a genuine baseline, a periodic check-in. The rest of the time you can estimate strength from submaximal work (an estimated 1RM from a heavy set of a few reps) and let progressive overload on those sets tell you whether a client is getting stronger. Reserve actual max testing for the clients and moments where the number has a job to do, and keep everyone else training productively below it.
How heavy should clients lift to get stronger?
Heavy enough to be genuinely challenging, but usually short of a true max. The evidence-based strength stance is that most productive strength work sits in a submaximal, autoregulated zone - hard sets with a couple of reps still in reserve - rather than repeated grinding singles at the limit. That gives you the tension and intent that drive strength while keeping fatigue and technical breakdown manageable enough to repeat week after week.
