Dr. Mike Israetel holds a PhD in sport physiology and co-founded Renaissance Periodization, whose channel sits around 3.9 million subscribers. His main contribution to how coaches talk about programming is the set of volume landmarks — MV, MEV, MAV and MRV — that turned "how many sets should I do?" from a vibe into a measurable range. Whether or not you follow every RP recommendation, this is the vocabulary a large share of the industry now programs with, so it is worth understanding on its own terms.

- 1. Count hard sets per muscle, per week. Volume is not "how long you trained" or "how sore you got." It is the number of challenging working sets a muscle receives across the week, and that is the unit everything else is measured in.
- 2. There are four landmarks, not one magic number. Israetel frames volume as a ladder: MV (maintenance) below MEV (where growth starts), up through MAV (the productive middle) to MRV (the recoverable ceiling). More is only better up to a point.
- 3. Program between MEV and MRV, and it's individual. The productive range sits between minimum effective and maximum recoverable volume, and it differs by person and by muscle — a big, resilient muscle like the back tolerates more weekly sets than the biceps. He talks in ranges rather than one fixed dose for everyone.
- 4. Ramp across the block, then deload. You don't run the same sets every week. Start a training block near MEV, add a little volume as the body adapts, push toward MRV, then pull back to maintenance and reset before the next block.
- 5. Past your ceiling, extra sets are junk volume. Training beyond your recoverable ceiling is not bonus growth — it is fatigue that accumulates and stalls progress. The skill is finding your window and staying inside it, not maxing out sets.

We agree with the spine of this: volume is the biggest single lever for hypertrophy, and the landmark model is the cleanest planning scaffold going. Giving a client a defined start point, a weekly progression and a scheduled deload beats "keep adding weight and hope," and it makes your programming defensible when a client asks why the plan looks the way it does.
Where we'd add nuance for people running a coaching business, not just training themselves: you cannot eyeball MEV and MRV across twenty clients. The landmarks are only useful if you can see each client's actual logged sets and how they responded — without that data you are guessing, and the framework quietly becomes decoration. This is also where the model gets misused. Coaches new to it tend to chase MRV as a target, when for most online clients the ceiling is not the problem at all.
Honestly, the more common failure we see is the opposite of overtraining. Plenty of online clients aren't over-dosed on volume; they're under-dosing effort — sets left three reps short of failure, sloppy tempo, skipped sessions. Adding sets on top of soft sets just adds soft sets. So before you ramp volume, ramp intensity of effort and consistency. Israetel would not disagree, but it's easy to walk away from a volume video thinking "more sets" when the real lever for your specific client is "harder, more consistent sets."
And treat the numbers as ranges, not gospel. The precise per-muscle figures matter far less than the shape of the plan — progressive, recoverable, deloaded on schedule — and than your honesty about what the logs say. Use the landmarks to structure the block; use the client's results to place them inside it.
Turning volume landmarks into a real program you can run.
The landmark model only pays off when the ramp and the logging live in one place. All figures are hard working sets per muscle per week, and are illustrative ranges you calibrate per client — not medical or prescriptive advice, and not exact numbers from the video. A well-trained back tolerates far more than the biceps, so the rows differ on purpose.
How to use it (calibration checklist)
- · Set the floor. Start week 1 at the low end for a newer or fatigued client, the high end for an advanced, well-recovered one.
- · Add ~1-2 sets per muscle per week only while logs keep improving (reps, load, or clean sets in reserve).
- · Watch the recovery signals. Joint aches, sleep, mood, and stalled or falling performance mean you're near MRV — stop climbing.
- · Deload on schedule. Week 4 drops toward maintenance so the next block starts fresh; don't skip it because the client "feels fine."
- · Reset and repeat. Begin the next block a touch above where the last MEV was if the client grew and recovered well.
- · Fix effort first. If sets are being left short of failure, tighten effort and technique before adding any volume.

Israetel does not give one universal number, and neither should a coach. His volume-landmark framework says the productive amount of hard working sets sits between a muscle’s minimum effective volume (MEV) and its maximum recoverable volume (MRV), and that this window is individual and muscle-specific — a well-trained back tolerates far more weekly sets than the biceps. The coaching job is to find each client’s window from their own logged results, not to copy a figure off a video.
What do MEV, MAV and MRV mean? +
They are volume landmarks measured in hard working sets per muscle per week. MV is maintenance volume (enough to hold muscle). MEV is the minimum effective volume where growth starts. MAV is the maximum adaptive volume, the productive middle where most growth happens. MRV is the maximum recoverable volume, the ceiling beyond which added sets stop helping and just pile up fatigue. Productive programming lives between MEV and MRV.
How should a coach ramp training volume across a mesocycle? +
Start the block near the client’s MEV, add roughly a set or two per muscle per week as they adapt, push toward MRV in the last hard week, then deload back toward maintenance and reset for the next block. You run the ramp, not the same sets every week. The value a coach adds is calibrating the start point and the deload timing from real check-in and logging data, so the client keeps progressing instead of grinding into junk volume.
Is more training volume always better for muscle growth? +
No. That is the core of the video: past a client’s recoverable ceiling, extra sets are not extra gains — they accumulate fatigue and can stall progress. For most online clients the first fix is not more sets but harder, more consistent sets: effort, technique and adherence usually gate results before weekly volume does. Add volume deliberately, only when the logged data and recovery say there is room.
