Passive vs active range of motion

Passive and active range of motion describe the same joint measured two different ways: one with help, one under a client's own control. The distance between them is the part most coaches can actually change. This glossary entry explains what each one means, why active range is almost always smaller, why the gap matters more than raw flexibility, how to assess it over video without diagnosing anyone, and how to train it.

the short answer

Passive range of motion (PROM) is the range a joint moves through when an outside force does the work, such as gravity, a strap, a partner, or your other hand. Active range of motion (AROM) is the range you can move that same joint through using only your own muscles. Active is almost always the smaller of the two, and the gap between them is the range you can reach but cannot yet control. That gap is trainable, and for most lifting clients, closing it matters more than simply chasing a bigger passive range.

The two terms measure the same joint but answer different questions. Passive range asks how far the joint can go when something else moves it. Active range asks how far the client can move it themselves. Line them up and the picture is easy to read.

What it tells you The raw range that is physically available at the joint. The range you can actually use under your own power, which is the range that shows up in a lift.
How to train it Static and loaded stretching, plus positional work to open the available range. End-range strength work, slow controlled tempo drills and lengthened-position lifts that teach control across the range.

A quick way to feel the difference: raise one arm straight out to the side as high as it will go on its own, then use your other hand to push it a little higher. That first stopping point is your active range. The second, assisted point is your passive range. The extra distance you just borrowed with a push is the gap, and right now your muscles cannot hold you there without help.

why the gap matters

Usable strength lives in the range a client controls.

A client can have plenty of passive range and still stall in a lift, because a barbell only cares about the range they can drive with their own muscles. Passive flexibility that has no active control behind it does not transfer to lifting depth. It looks impressive in a stretch and disappears the moment there is load.

The classic example is the deep squat. Push someone into the bottom position with support and their hips may reach it fine, which is passive range. Ask them to lower into that same depth under a loaded bar, in control, and stand back up, and many of them cannot. The range is there; the strength and control across it are not. That missing control is the gap, and it is what usually holds a lift back, not the raw range.

This is why chasing flexibility alone is often the wrong goal. A slightly smaller range the client fully owns beats a large range they can only reach with a strap. When you train the active end of the range, you are turning borrowed distance into distance they can use under a bar, which is what carries over to their progressive overload over time.

You do not need a goniometer or clinical measurements to coach this. You are watching movement quality and comparing two clips, not measuring a joint or assessing its health. Two simple side-by-side videos make the gap visible in most clients.

Squat: unsupported vs supported

Ask the client to film a slow bodyweight squat as deep as they can control on their own, then a second squat holding a doorframe or a suspension strap for support. If the supported version is noticeably deeper, active control is the limiter, not raw range. If both stop at the same depth, the range itself is what is short.

Leg raise: active vs assisted

Lying on their back, the client lifts one straight leg as high as they can under their own power, then lowers it and pulls the same leg further with a strap or their hands. The first height is active range, the assisted height is passive range, and the difference on screen is the gap for that hip.

What to watch for

Look at where the range suddenly changes, and whether the client can pause and actively hold the end position rather than falling into it. A big active-to-passive difference points to a control problem you can train. Pain, clunking, a joint that gives way, or a large difference between left and right are signals to refer out, not to program around.

How to train the active range.

Closing the gap means teaching the muscles to produce and control force where they currently give up. That is a strength problem more than a flexibility one, so the tools are loaded and controlled rather than passive.

Lift at end range

Load the positions near the edge of active range so the client learns to produce force there. Lengthened partials are one honest way to keep tension right at the stretched end of the range.

Own the eccentric

Slow, controlled reps through the full range build control, and eccentric loading in a lengthened position is especially good at making a new range feel strong rather than shaky.

Prescribe the tempo

Write a clear tempo so the client moves with control instead of momentum. The tempo calculator turns a tempo like 3-1-1 into the time each rep should take.

Two more tools round this out. Active end-range circles, where the client slowly and deliberately moves a joint through its own outer range with no momentum and no external help, teach ownership of the outer positions. And loaded stretching, holding a lengthened position under light load, bridges passive range into active control. Passive stretching and a good warm-up still help by opening the door, but it is the active, loaded work that walks the client through it, and paying attention to time under tension at the end range is what makes the new control stick.

There is a clear line here, and staying on the right side of it protects both you and the client. Comparing two videos and coaching control is training. Deciding whether a joint is healthy, measuring it in degrees against clinical norms, or working around pain is not, and it belongs to a qualified professional. Refer out, rather than program around it, when a client has:

  • -Pain in or around a joint, especially sharp, sudden or lingering pain.
  • -Signs of hypermobility, where a joint moves well beyond a typical range or feels unstable.
  • -A recent surgery, injury or medical condition affecting the joint.
  • -A range that suddenly changed, or a large, unexplained difference between the left and right sides.

You will notice this guide never gives a target number of degrees for a healthy range. That is deliberate. Clinical norm tables exist for professionals with the right tools assessing a specific joint in person, not for coaching from a check-in video, and normal varies far too much between people to be useful as a coaching target. Coach the range your client needs to move and lift well, and leave the joint-by-joint measurements to a clinician.

Why is active range of motion smaller than passive?

Active range is limited by the force you can produce and control, while passive range is limited only by the tissue. An outside force can take a joint to the edge of what the tissue allows, but your own muscles can only take it as far as they can actively drive and stabilise, which is usually a shorter distance. The difference between the two is the range you can reach but cannot yet control.

Is passive stretching useless?

No. Passive stretching can genuinely increase the range a joint has available, and it is useful for opening a restricted position or as part of a cool-down. The honest caveat is that a bigger passive range does not automatically become usable strength. If you want it to show up in training, pair it with active, loaded work at the new end range.

How do I improve active range of motion?

Train strength and control at the edge of your current range. End-range lifts, lengthened-position work, slow controlled tempo reps and active end-range circles all teach the muscles to produce force where they used to give up. Progress the load and the range gradually, the same way you would with any other lift.

What is a normal range of motion?

There is no single normal. Healthy range varies a lot between people based on anatomy, training history and the joint in question, and the degree tables used in clinical settings are for professionals assessing a specific joint, not for coaching from a check-in video. Focus on whether a client can move well and control the range their training needs, and refer to a clinician if a joint looks painful, unstable or very asymmetrical.
