The practical read for a roster is simple: bilateral is the efficient default for a client who tolerates it, and unilateral work is a tool you add for a reason - an imbalance to close, a back or knee to spare, a home gym with two dumbbells, or a client who needs to own single-leg stability for their sport or their life.
Where we'd add nuance: the biggest practical win of single-limb work in a coaching context is one the studies don't measure - it exposes cheating. A client who grinds a bilateral leg press with a dominant side quietly under-training the other can't hide it in a split squat. So we use unilateral work partly as an assessment: it shows you the asymmetry, and then it fixes it. Lead the weaker side, cap the stronger side to match, and re-check the gap on a set schedule.
The trap to avoid is doubling a client's session time in the name of "balance." Single-limb work costs roughly twice the sets for the same muscle, so if you swap everything to unilateral you either blow up the session or halve the effective volume per side without meaning to. Use it surgically - one or two single-limb slots where they earn their place - not as a wholesale replacement.

Is unilateral or bilateral training better for muscle growth?

So the choice is not about a growth winner; it is about the trade-offs. Bilateral lifts usually let a client move more total load and are time-efficient. Unilateral work irons out left-right imbalances, can be gentler on a cranky joint or lower back, and demands more stability. For a coach, that means picking by the client's situation, not by which one is 'best' in the abstract.
When should a coach program single-limb (unilateral) exercises?
Reach for unilateral work when a client has a clear side-to-side strength or size difference you want to close, when a bilateral lift aggravates their lower back or a joint, when they train with limited equipment, or when balance and control are themselves a goal. It is also useful for squeezing quality volume into a muscle without loading the spine further. If none of those apply and the client tolerates bilateral loading well, bilateral is usually the more efficient default with single-limb work layered in as an accessory.
Do you get more muscle from training one limb at a time?
Not automatically. The idea that single-limb training doubles the stimulus does not hold up - the research does not show unilateral work as a growth cheat code. What it does offer is more even development between sides and often a better mind-muscle connection on the working limb, because the client can focus on one side at a time. Program it for those reasons, not on the promise of extra growth, and hold each client's per-side volume in view so one limb is not quietly under-trained.
How should imbalances change how I program a client?
Start unilateral work leading with the weaker side, match the stronger side to the reps the weaker one can complete rather than pushing it further ahead, and re-test the gap every few weeks. Most everyday asymmetries are normal and do not need chasing; act when the difference is large, is growing, or comes with pain. The goal is a client who is strong and developed on both sides and can load their main lifts symmetrically, not perfect equality measured to the rep.
