His work has made him one of the most-discussed voices in the skill-acquisition conversation in grappling. Coachway's take

We find this one of the most useful ideas in the whole library, because it's really about how skill is learned, and it reaches far past jiu-jitsu. Any coach who teaches a movement - a lift, a sprint, a swing - is in the skill-acquisition business, and the constraints-led view is a strong corrective to the instinct to just cue harder. If a client keeps missing a position no matter how many times you explain it, the problem may be the practice design, not their listening: change the task so the right solution is the one that works.

Where we'd add nuance: it's not a religion, and 'never explain anything' is a caricature of it. A little direct instruction has its place, especially for safety and for orienting a beginner, and the honest version is a shift in emphasis toward designed practice and guided discovery rather than a total ban on cues. The skill for the coach is designing the constraint - the rule or setup that makes the good movement emerge - which is harder than reciting a technique but far more effective when you get it right.

For online coaching specifically, this is oddly freeing. You can't stand next to a client and correct them rep by rep anyway - so instead of drowning them in cues they can't apply alone, you design a practice task with a built-in constraint that does the coaching for you: a tempo, a target, a setup rule, a game against their own previous performance. Then you review how they solved it and adjust the constraint. It fits the remote reality better than cue-heavy instruction ever did.

What is the constraints-led approach (CLA)?

The constraints-led approach is a way of coaching skill that comes from ecological dynamics: instead of teaching a fixed 'correct' technique through isolated repetition, you design constrained practice tasks - small games with rules, positions and objectives - that the athlete has to solve against a resisting partner or a real problem. Skill emerges as they self-organise solutions under those constraints, and because the practice looks like the real thing, it transfers. Why not just drill the correct technique?

Reciting the 'right' technique in a static setting strips out the perception and decision-making that make a skill usable: reading the opponent, timing, adapting when they react. It's not that technical detail never matters; it's that isolated repetition is a weak way to develop usable skill.

How do you scale a constraints-led practice?

You adjust the constraints so the task sits at challenge-point - hard enough to demand real problem-solving, easy enough that the athlete can actually succeed some of the time. If a game is too hard, the athlete flails and learns little; too easy, and there's nothing to solve. Scaling means changing the rules, the starting position, the objective, the partner's level of resistance, or the space, to dial the difficulty to that sweet spot for this athlete right now - and moving it as they improve. Does this apply outside grappling, or to online coaching?

Yes - it's general skill-acquisition, so the principle carries to any skill a coach teaches, including lifting technique. For example, a constraint that makes the correct movement the easiest solution (a tempo, a target, a setup rule) can teach a lift better than a list of cues.
